
The Mid-Career Checkpoint program is an Australian Government initiative providing a free service that supports eligible parents, carers and existing workers* looking to return to the workforce or advance their careers.
Eligible participants receive at no cost:
- A tailored skills and employment assessment known as a Skills, Training and Employment Plan (STEP)
- Up to $3,000 (GST-free) towards accredited training recommended in your STEP.
- Coaching sessions, and
- Personalised career advice
Eligibility
This program is available to Australian Citizens or Permanent residents living in New South Wales, Victoria or Queensland.
In addition, you must qualify as one of the following:

A Parent who has taken a six-month break (or more) to pursue parenting responsibilities and:
- You’re now looking to return to paid work; OR
- You have returned to paid work (within the past 18 months) but would now like to upskill, advance or change your career.

A Carer who has taken a six-month break (or more) to pursue caring responsibilities and:
- You’re now looking to return to paid work; OR
- You have returned to paid work (within the past 18 months) but would now like to upskill, advance or change your career.

An existing worker in a designated industry* who is currently working in one of the following sectors:
- Accommodation and Food Services
- Education and Training
- Arts and Recreation Services
- Retail Trade
- Administrative and Support Services
- Residential Care Services
- Child Care Services
What does the program offer?
The Training Incentive provides eligible participants funding of up to $3,000 (GST-free) to support your enrolment in specific accredited training, where this training is recommended in your Skills, Training and Employment Plan (STEP).
All participants receive a customised Skills, Training and Employment Plan (STEP) that details their employment goals and identifies their attributes, skills and qualifications, as well as any skills gaps.
Each STEP provides information on local employment and training opportunities in line with their employment goals.
Coaching sessions may focus on but are not limited to:
- resume and job application writing
- interview preparation and techniques
- leveraging networking opportunities
- career progression while in part-time employment and,
- improving digital literacy.
How do I apply?
There are a limited number of Training Incentives available each financial year, so you must speak with your designated provider about accessing the Incentive when undertaking the Mid-Career Checkpoint Program.
Only the designated provider in your state (listed below) can suitably assess your eligibility for the Mid-Career Checkpoint Program and the Skills and Training Incentive.
Please note that you must not enrol and pay for the training before contacting your provider for this program.
Before you undertake the training, your Mid-Career Checkpoint provider must first:
1. Assess your eligibility
2. Complete a tailored Skills, Training and Employment Plan (STEP)
3. Register you for the Training Incentive
4. Assist you to enrol in the training*
5. If the cost of your tuition exceeds the Government’s training incentive, your provider will send you a co-
contribution invoice, and
6. Make a total payment to the training organisation.
